LEAP Studio Stage: Treasure Island

July 9 - July 20, 2018

8:30am - 4:00pm

Based on the adventure novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, Treasure Island is an unforgettable tale of treachery and mayhem in the tropical ocean. Featuring a host of legendary swashbucklers including Billy Bones, Anne Bonney, and Long John Silver, join 14-year old Jim Hawkins on a high seas adventure in this non-musical stage adaptation.

SST is delighted to offer our first acting performance training program for Middle School theatre artists. Students work in a small cohort alongside a director to explore performance skills in-depth with group & 1-on-1 coaching. This fast-paced interdisciplinary training program focuses on acting and performance skills, with an emphasis on learning vocabulary and technique using scripted material. Rehearsal process focuses on building an inclusive ensemble of peers dedicated to re-imagining a well-known story for the stage.

An extension of our summertime musical theatre program, LEAP: Studio Stage focuses on staging productions in a small “black box” theatre space where students are guided by their teaching artist to be heavily involved in all facets of the production including imagining fresh interpretations, blocking, character development, and the minimalistic approach to set, prop, and costume construction.

None! Students in Grades 7-12 of all experience levels are encouraged to register.

No audition to participate. An audition process to assign roles will be held during the first week of rehearsal.  Students of all experience levels are welcome. This class is ideal for beginners interested in a scripted play experience and for those who have made the leap from theatre classes to Main Stage productions in their school or community. Our goal is to build skills and confidence in all young artists participating.

Casting is inclusive, ensemble-focused, and conducted “blind” across the spectrum of gender/race/ability/etc. Working under the mentorship of the Teaching Artist-Director, each student is heavily involved the process of developing and presenting the character they are cast as.

One performance for all family & friends will be held on the final Friday of class at 2:30pm. No ticket purchase required.

Teen Workshops

***Please register for the grade your student will be ENTERING in Fall 2018***

Teen workshops focus on refining theatre skills in acting, vocal technique, movement, stagecraft, and production while cultivating rich, collaborative experiences as an ensemble. Teens work together on devised or scripted material, relevant to their lives, while identifying universal themes or common social issues. In a positive and supportive process, teens reflect critically on their work to offer/receive constructive peer feedback on their artistic growth while learning about the larger context of Art in their lives.

  • Sharing leadership responsibilities throughout the program’s process
  • Using research, critical analysis, background knowledge, and cultural context to develop character relationships, enhance physical and vocal choices, and inform the believability and relevance of work
  • Practice various performing arts techniques to refine theatrical skill-sets
