Spark your child’s curiosity with sensory exploration and art-making! Start with an active storytime: bringing books to life through creative drama, songs and hands-on sensory engagement. Then, the space transforms into an interactive art, sensory, and gross-motor playscape for children to explore at their own pace. Children learn how to use new and familiar materials, gain confidence in their art-making abilities, and create social interactions with their peers, in a safe and child-centered environment.

Activities/themes are subject to change

Wednesday, October 2 – Perfect Square!

Explore some of the millions of ways we transform PAPER inspired by the incredible book. “Perfect Square” by Michael Hall. We’ll rip, cut, punch holes and reassemble colorful paper to create some amazing collages to take home. Tools we will explore in this class will be textured scissors, hole punches, glue with brushes, glue sticks, and ink pens. Come explore other stations like shape stamping with paint on paper and silly faces loose parts play. Teaching Artist: Megan

Wednesday, October 9 – Underwater Creatures!

Using ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ by David Wojtowycz as our inspiration, we’ll sing fish songs and play sea creature games together as a group. Free-explore stations will include a collaborative sticky seashore wall, rainbow fish playdough and making our own salt and watercolor fishes! Teaching Artist: Kiera

Wednesday, October 16 – Breeze into Autumn

With wind-inspired story and project stations. Inspired by our story, “Like a Windy Day” by Frank Asch, we’ll explore windy movement in our bodies with our parachute and colorful scarves. Station activities include a diy wind tunnel experiment station, breezy print-making and colorful, tinkling wind chimes makes of wood. Children will paint and assemble rainbow wind chimes to blow in the breeze, including sound elements to make the chimes complete!  Teaching Artist: Megan

Wednesday, October 23 – Pumpkin Bonanza!

Learn about the life cycle of pumpkins in our story, “Pumpkin Circle” as we roll up our sleeves to tinker with mini pumpkins. Explore the many options of the tinker tray as you transform your ordinary pumpkin into a one-of-a-kind, glittery sculpture. Children explore materials like toothpicks, pushpins, colorful tape, googly eyes, glitter glue, rubber bands, beads, and sticky sequins! Explore pumpkin guts in the sensory bin and dissect seeds with tweezers. Roll out scented dough and make fall-inspired cut-outs or 3d dough sculptures. Teaching Artist: Megan

Wednesday, October 30 – Mixed Media Owl Puppets

Children design and construct their own owl puppets using a varied selection of art materials. Inspired by the book, “Owl Babies” by Martin Waddell, we’ll look (and listen) to images of owls in the wild. Children will use materials like feathers, corrugated cardboard, paper shapes, and paint sticks to make their original owl characters. We’ll see how our owl puppets look on the big shadow screen and experiment with color and light on an overhead projector! Build a giant home for your puppet using fabric, pillows and your imagination. Teaching Artist: Megan

Wednesday, November 6 – It’s FALL!

We’ll read the book, “Its Fall” by Linda Glaser and explore possibilities for art-making with materials we find outside! What can you build using earthen clay “logs” and stones, sticks, leaves and shells? We’ll bring a mini-city to life as we work together in this process-art session celebrating nature! Explore fall colors with tempera cake painting and clay/water in the sensory bin! Teaching Artist: Kiera

Wednesday, November 13 – Calling all monsters

Explore friendly monster characters of all shapes and sizes using the story “Monsters LOVE Colors” by Mike Austin. We’ll explore monster movements in our bodies and play a hungry monster game. After the story, we’ll create our own colorful monsters painted with kitchen utensils and our fingers, squish playdoh monster sculptures and create mixed media monster puppets using paper bags! Teaching Artist: Kiera
