August 2 - August 20, 2021

9:00am - 4:30pm

TURN AROUND…A Devised Work

There’s the observable world around you– your reality  …But what lurks in the shadows…just out of the corner of your eye? Or do you just have an “active imagination”?
Most will keep their eyes forward, but some – only some – will have the courage to TURN AROUND! Inspired by such shows as Black Mirror and Twilight Zone, this LEAP Studio will give you the opportunity to devise a brand new, evocative piece of fictional performance.

ABOUT LEAP: Studio

Want to act, direct, and write? Do all three and make a difference with an original piece of theatre! This studio will immerse you in the most important part of theatre-making: the process of creating art! Your small cohort of teens from all theatrical backgrounds will work with Director and Teaching Artist, Kivan Kirk, to devise, produce, and perform original work. You’ll start with brainstorming, riffing, and storyboarding your plot. Then, through a series of improv games, research, and discussions, you’ll begin to write the script. Your rehearsal process will help you build an inclusive ensemble where you are heavily involved in all production facets. This class is not about fancy  sets or crazy special effects; Kivan will focus on supporting you in acting technique, telling a compelling story, collaboration, and performance skills. The experience culminates in two performances at Park Square Theatre.
An excellent choice for those who: want more writing experience, are curious about directing, are interested in sci/fi & fantasy, are hungry to act in an original show, and want to stretch their acting chops by playing complicated characters.

REGISTRATION & PREREQUISITES

Open to young artists entering Grades 7-12 in Fall 2021. Those outside of this age range will not be permitted.
This camp is devoted to creating a growth mindset around the concept of mastery and young artists of all theatrical backgrounds (including those who are having their first theatre experience) are encouraged to register. There are no prerequisites to register and all those who register will be cast in the production. However, conflicts with rehearsal and performance dates must be minimal.
Things to consider: This is an intensive program. There is an expectation to memorize staging & dialogue quickly. For the wellbeing of all involved, young artists must have the endurance to withstand 8-hour days which entail extensive information processing, social interaction, and physical activity, while meeting & maintaining their basic physical & mental health needs. Please contact us if your young artist needs accommodations.

REHEARSALS

Rehearsals will take place at Park Square Theatre in downtown St. Paul. Young artists will rehearse Monday-Friday, August 2-20 from 9:00am-4:30pm. A high level of dedication, work-ethic, and focus are expected at rehearsal and there is an expectation to work outside of rehearsal on research, memorization, character development, and show promotion.

PERFORMANCES

Young artists will hold two performances at Park Square Theatre. On performance days, young artists will be called 1.5 hours prior to the show and are dismissed immediately following the performance. Conflicts with performance dates must be approved by the director and may affect casting.
Performance Dates:
Saturday, August 21 | 7:00 PM
Sunday, August 22 | 2:00 PM

THIS CAMP IS PAY AS YOU’RE ABLE

Our full registration fee represents the amount that it costs us to bring this program to you. But during this trying financial and emotional time for families, SteppingStoneprograms are Pay As You’re Able.

That means exactly what it says -pay what your family can afford. That may mean covering your fees and someone else’s. It also may mean paying half or some of the fee. If these options do not work for your family financially, we still want for your young artist to be able to attend. Email education@steppingstonetheatre.org and we will work with you to make attendance possible.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement

At SteppingStone, we are committed to access and inclusion for all people. Our programs stand firmly in opposition to racism and we challenge our young artists, staff, and Board of Directors to foster inclusion and to seek equity for all, including Black, Indigenous, people of color, LGBTQAI+, economically disadvantaged, all religions, veterans, active military, and those with accessibility needs. We work with families to meet students’ needs be it social, academic, developmental, or physical. SteppingStone respects students’ gender expression and provides access to gender-neutral facilities.

We Believe

Young people are artists, makers, and doers. They need to belong and to contribute to their world. When young people make art together, they change themselves and the world around them for the better.

We Do

SteppingStone ignites belonging, generosity, mastery, self-advocacy, and inspiration by creating art with young people to share with the world.
