The Snowy Day – 2021

After evaluation of the current situation of Covid-19 in our community, SteppingStone Theatre for Youth has made the difficult decision to postpone the production of The Snowy Day (Feb 19-27). Our hope is to be able to offer this beautiful and wonder-filled play in November-December of 2022. 

At SteppingStone, our first priority is the safety and wellness of young people and their families. The production of The Snowy Day is special in that half of the audience is made up of elementary children attending through their schools. Historically, a large portion of SteppingStone’s school audience comes from communities that have been hard hit by Covid and that remain at high risk. Schools and families are grappling with restrictions on field trips, difficult access to buses, and the uncertainty stemming from the possibility of another wave of covid. Given these obstacles, postponing the production to a time when all young people can return to the theatre with a spirit of wonder and togetherness is the best thing that SteppingStone can do for them.

The wonder of a fresh snowfall, the delight of whistling for the first time, the awe in finding a special treasure comes to life in The Snowy Day and Other Stories by Ezra Jack Keats. This story celebrates the joy in the seasons of a child’s world. 

A timeless classic, The Snowy Day is the most checked-out volume of all time at the New York Public Library and is known for being the first book featuring an African American child to win the Caldecott Medal (The Atlantic). This new ensemble-driven production will explore connections to water and the changing of the seasons through movement and storytelling.
